PEYNTOUR, John, of Devizes, Wilts.

Peyntour, a dyer by trade, is first heard of in 1379, when, at Devizes, he contributed the sum of 6d. towards the poll tax. He stood surety for the attendance at the Parliament of 1386 of Richard Gobet, who shortly afterwards made him principal trustee of a charity later known as ‘Gobet’s dole’. In September 1388 he also stood surety for the attendance of Richard Cardmaker at the Cambridge Parliament.
