POPE, Peter, of Strood, Kent.

In 1381 Pope was acting as a feoffee of property in Strood (across the Medway from Rochester), and as ‘of Strood’ he obtained a royal pardon for unspecified offences in the following year, on 16 May. Nevertheless, he is probably to be identified with Peter Pope ‘of the Isle of Thanet’ who, along with another man, was appointed as a buyer and purveyor of victuals for Calais in April 1388. In October 1390, however, a writ of supersedeas was issued to the Exchequer in respect of its claims against him, as the treasurer of Calais, Roger Walden, had testified in Chancery that he had not received his commission of appointment.1CP25(1)108/216/206; C67/29 m. 26; CCR, 1389-92, pp. 303-4.
