John was probably related to William Sadeler, who paid 6d. towards the poll tax of 1379 as living in Lewes. As ‘of Rumsey’ in 1390, together with his wife Isabel, he conveyed to William White a messuage in Cliffe by Lewes, this being part of Isabel’s inheritance. He served as a juror at Lewes in October 1397, providing information to royal commissioners about the forfeited possessions of Sir Thomas Mortimer, recently impeached for treason; and, mindful of the prevailing atmosphere of mistrust, took out a royal pardon in June following.2E179/189/41 m. 23; CP25(1)240/77/27; C145/261/3B; C67/30 m. 12. There is nothing to identify him with the John Sadeler murdered at Boreham in east Sussex in April 1417: CPR, 1416-22, p. 176.
