biography text

At Easter 1400 Sampson became a feoffee of land in Chatley, Felstead and Leighs, Essex. He was admitted as a freeman of Maldon in January 1403. At the time of his first election as a wardman, in 1405, he was away, ultra mare, and apparently lived by trade. In 1423 he sued a merchant of Clavering in the borough court for failing to deliver malt to him according to contract, and on other occasions he brought pleas of debt. He was a surety for the peace in 1407, fined in the local courts for an assault in 1408, named as an arbitrator in a dispute in 1414, and appointed a collector of subsidies in All Saints’ parish in 1423.2Essex Feet of Fines, iii. 232; Maldon ct. bk. i. f. 21; ct. rolls 3 m. 2, 4 m. 4v, 9 m. 2v, 1427 (D/DB, 3/3, 419); Essex Rev. xvi. 132. Apart from his continual election to local offices until 1445, nothing further is known of him.
