biography text
Thomas was probably related to John Sarceller, who was returned for Midhurst in 1388. The family owned a burgage in North Street, which in 1422 was described as formerly belonging to Thomas Sarceller ‘the younger’.1W. Suss. RO, Cowdray ms, 4455. There is no evidence to identify him with the shoemaker of the same name, who along with his wife Margaret was assessed at 3s. for the poll tax of 1380 as living in Chichester, or with Thomas, son of Richard Sarceller, who before July 1412 held property near Chichester at Yapton and Barnham: Suss. Arch. Colls. xxiv. 67; lxxxix. 160.
