Roger may have been the son of John Scoce, who had married Isabel, daughter of William Wylkin, and been bailiff of Dartmouth in 1343-4.1H.R. Watkin, Dartmouth, 35, 44, 183. Two of his kinsmen, Michael and John Scoce, were among the mariners who gave evidence in 1394 to the court of chivalry in Sir John Roches’s suit against John Hawley I, while another, Richard Scoce, was recorded as living in Dartmouth in 1397. But, save on the occasion of his election to Parliament, Roger himself is recorded only once: some time before 1372 when, described as ‘of Colemore’, he was associated with the vicar of Townstall in a conveyance to Hawley’s parents of a messuage in Dartmouth.2C47/6/4/7; CCR, 1396-9, p. 197; Watkin, 59.
