biography text
Shortly before July 1384 Scott, as master of the balinger belonging to the community of Hastings, was party to the capture and plunder of a ship from Stralsund, seized off Berwick-upon-Tweed by a fleet from the Cinque Ports. Under Henry IV he held a little land at Udimore, Guestling, Fairlight and Bexley on which, as a baron of the Ports, he was able to claim exemption from taxation.1CCR, 1381-5, p. 461; E179/225/31, 33, 34.

Notes
There is insufficient evidence to identify him with the John Scott who represented Hythe in Parliament in April 1384 and served as a jurat of that Port in 1386-8 and 1389-90: Hythe reg. 1, ff. 12, 14d.
