STAPLETON, John I.

In November 1404 Stapleton stood surety for Simon Blakeborne, serjeant-at-arms, when the latter farmed at the Exchequer the royal alnage on cloth sold in Surrey and Sussex. While attending the unusually long Parliament of 1406 at Westminster, he was himself granted at the Exchequer on 11 June (towards the end of the second session), custody of a tenement at Midhurst lately forfeited to the Crown, to hold for 30 years at an annual rent of 2s. Then, during the third parliamentary session, in November, he again provided securities for Blakeborne.1CFR, xii. 276; xiii. 34, 50.
