WEBBE, Henry, of Devizes, Wilts.

Webbe first appears in the records in 1379 when, at Devizes, he paid as much as 1s. towards the poll tax levied by Parliament. In June 1380 William Hervy, the royal alnager of cloth throughout England, appointed him as one of his three deputies, and he may well have been still occupying this post at the time of his first election to the Commons. Thereafter, little is heard of him until he stood surety for the attendance of Simon Skinner at the Gloucester Parliament of 1407. He was perhaps the Henry Webbe ‘of Wiltshire’ to whom John Prentys of Benacre, Suffolk, owed £2 in 1412:1CPR, 1377-81, p. 497; 1408-13, p. 332; E179/239/193 m. 5; C219/10/4.
