YOUNG, Thomas II, of Winchelsea, Suss.

Thomas’s presumed father, Walter, was a shipmaster who served as mayor of Winchelsea in 1403-4.1E101/67/23 no. 45. The two men sat together on juries which in May 1411 indicted William Long II of Rye for piracy. Thomas witnessed deeds at Winchelsea between 1409 and 1421, having in the meantime, in 1415, provided information to the royal commissioners surveying the town in order that walls might be built within its original perimeter. Elsewhere he held land at Icklesham, on which, as a Portsman, he claimed exemption from parliamentary fifteenths.2Cat. Rye Recs. ed. Dell, 136/161, 146/2; Add.
