Brought in on the Admiralty interest at Plymouth in 1780, Darby felt politically bound to Lord Sandwich, to whose favour he owed his professional advancement. He voted steadily in support of North’s ministry, against Shelburne’s peace preliminaries, 18 Feb. 1783, and for Fox’s India bill, 27 Nov. 1783. As an adherent of the Fox-North opposition, he lost his seat at the general election of 1784.
Darby died 26 Mar. 1790.
