biography text

Barbour may have been related to the Weymouth family of the same name,2C146/9580; CAD, ii. C2406. but he himself lived on the northern side of the estuary of the River Wey, at Melcombe Regis. Nothing more is known of him beyond his involvement in relatively unimportant local matters: in February 1397, with the bailiff’s permission, he carted away two trees from the land of William Fisher, these being forfeit for arrears of rent due to the town; and in May that year he was fined 3d. for drawing blood in a brawl.3HMC 5th Rep. 576-7. It was during his only known term as bailiff that he was returned to Parliament.
