biography text

Bennett does not appear in the surviving Maldon records, unless he was the William ‘Beneye’ who, in 1412, paid £1 13s.4d. for land adjacent to Maldon market-place.1Essex RO, Maldon custumal, f. 267v. He certainly lived there, however, being subsequently described as ‘of Maldon, yeoman’. On the occasion of his only election for the borough, in 1419, he attested the indenture of return of the knights of the shire; and at the elections held for the Parliament of 1421 (May) he stood surety for John Cooper II of Maldon. He may have been the William Bennett who was made an executor of a will at Colchester in 1426.2C219/12/3, 5; Colchester Moot Hall, ct. roll 47 m. 4v.
