John was perhaps the son of William Bexle, a Portsman who had held land at Wilting, near Hastings, in the 1370s. Certainly, he himself claimed exemption from taxation on property in the same place during the early years of Henry IV’s reign. In addition, he had once been a tenant on the manor of Knelle.1CIMisc. v. 54.
