Bromlegh held property in Hythe from 1389, and witnessed deeds there from 1397. The maltolts he paid show that he worked as a barber (as his alias suggests), but he also sold wood both for fuel and building, as well as regularly trading in other merchandise worth between £4 and £6 a year. In 1413-14 his income from rents amounted to 26s.8d., and by 1419-20 he had amassed chattels worth £12.3HMC 6th Rep. 516; jurats’ bk. C, f. 62; D, f. 22. In July 1418 he made an enfeoffment of his property, which included 54 acres of arable land at Newchurch and near Hythe.4CP25(1)111/288/234.
Before his only known election to Parliament, Bromlegh was occasionally employed on town business outside Hythe. At Wye, in October 1419, he was arrested with Alexander Appleford and John Skinner IV on charges trumped up by Thomas Newman of Burmarsh, with whom the jurats had long been at odds. And in the following month he went to Dover to hire guns for the men of Hythe to use in the King’s service.5Jurats’ bk. D, ff. 45, 46.
