biography text
Members of the Eylove family had been living in Horsham since the 1330S. A contemporary of Roger’s named Henry Eylove held some land known as ‘Eyloves’ in nearby Slinfold, although, since he was engaged in the Sussex wool trade (on occasion as a smuggler), he more usually resided on the coast at Old Shoreham.1Add. Ch. 8823; CPR, 1391-6, pp. 608, 688; 1396-9, p. 80.
Roger himself is recorded as a witness to deeds at Horsham and Slinfold in the years between 1391 and 1405.2Add. Chs. 8848, 8852, 8854-5, 18683; Bodl. Ch. Suss. 205.
