biography text

Robert was perhaps a descendant of a namesake who appears on the subsidy roll of 1332 as living in Parham, some five miles from Arundel.1Suss. Rec. Soc. x. 300. He served as a juror at the borough court in October 1387, a year before his earliest return to Parliament, having perhaps already taken on the tenancy of the ‘gateway beyond the bridge’ at Arundel, for which he subsequently paid the earl of Arundel a rent of 3d. a year. A more substantial payment, of 6s.8d.p.a., was due to the prior of Tortington for a tenement Fisher held elsewhere in the town, at least down to 1409. He was a member of the jury which at Arundel on 22 Oct. 1415 gave evidence to the royal escheator conducting the inquest post mortem on Thomas, earl of Arundel.2Arundel castle mss A338, 342, M9; Two Fitzalan Surveys (Suss. Rec. Soc. lxvii), 117; C138/23/54.
