biography text

At the two elections of 1397 Gay went surety for the appearance in Parliament of Henry Seys and William Hicche II, respectively. Described as ‘the elder’, he was among the tenants of the borough of Portsmouth who, in 1410, refused to contribute towards the wages and expenses of one of the parliamentary burgesses, Henry Abraham, and was subsequently fined by the King’s bench.2C219/9/12, 13; Sel. Cases King’s Bench (Selden Soc. lxxxviii), 197-8.

Notes

There is a possibility that Gay was the same man as Richard Mautravers*, who had twice represented Portsmouth earlier in the 1380s, for his younger namesake, the Richard Gay who was to sit for the borough in 1447 and 1467, was also known as Richard Mautravers: HP ed. Wedgwood 1439-1509, Biogs. 366.
