biography text
The Gilbert family, one of whose number, Philip, served as bailiff of Weymouth in 1366-7, are known to have been living in the town by the mid 14th century.1CAD, i. C317, 811. The only mention of Robert, however, occurs in 1371, when a messuage in High Street above the quay, which had belonged to Laurence Gilbert, was conveyed by his nephew William to Philip Soydon†, Robert being then owner of an adjacent building.2C148/22.
