Between 1380 and 1385 Hughelot owned land in the hundreds of Hayne and Folkestone, near Hythe, on which as a Portsman he claimed exemption from taxation. In 1386, when he was in command of Hythe’s common barge, he captured, with the help of men from Dover, a cargo of white herring belonging to two Dutch merchants, on the false pretext that it was enemy property; and, on being required by the King’s Council to make restitution, flatly refused to do so. Accordingly, an order was sent to the warden of the Cinque Ports that April to compel him to obey, or else appear before the Council at Midsummer.
