biography text

Oxenford, a shoemaker, is frequently mentioned in the records of the borough court of Wallingford, where he served as a juror and was frequently amerced for selling shoes at excessive prices.3Ibid. W/JBb/29, 30, 33, 34, 38, 40-42, 44-57. He sometimes witnessed local deeds, and in 1387 served as a member of a jury testifying to the value of the estates pertaining to the honour of Wallingford. Ten years later, a few months after his last known appearance in Parliament, he was elected as one of the town’s bailiffs. Oxenford was wealthy enough to employ a chaplain who, however, was no credit to his calling, for he was involved in a number of affrays in 1401.4Ibid. W/RTb/96, 97; W/JBb/58; C260/100/48 m. 169.
