biography text

Although now one of the most obscure of the parliamentary burgesses for Southampton, Scarlet was clearly a well-known figure in the town, for between 1368 and 1396 he was frequently called upon to witness local conveyances.2Black Bk. (Soton Rec. Soc. xiii), i. 18, 43; Southampton RO, SC4/2/103, 118, 156, 165; God’s House deeds, D379, 383. In February 1392, when acting as a feoffee, he sold a tenement and garden on the east side of English Street to Geoffrey Waldern, a London mercer. Of his own trading concerns little is recorded, save that in the 1390s he was assessed for alnage on cloth sold in Southampton.3Southampton RO, SC4/2/151; E101/344/11.
