biography text

Early in 1396 Shrewsbury, a hackneyman, petitioned the Crown on behalf of the members of his calling who lived at Southwark, Dartford, Rochester and other towns between London and Dover, for such measures as would prevent them from being cheated of their dues, and suffering loss of horses by theft. The remedy, as granted on 5 Jan., was that fares were to be fixed at a lower rate and the horses branded. Shrewsbury is not recorded after witnessing a deed at Rochester in September 1407.1CPR, 1391-6, pp. 712-13; Harl. Ch. 53 A 49.
