SKINNER, Simon (d.1417), of Chew Magna, Som. and Devizes, Wilts.

Little known about Skinner, but he stood surety for the attendance of William Coventre III at the Parliament of November 1414, and for that of John Peyntour at the Parliament of March 1416, both being burgesses-elect for Devizes. He probably originated outside Wiltshire, for his will, made in June 1417 and proved shortly afterwards, requested burial in the graveyard of the church of St. Andrew, Chew Magna (a few miles south of Bristol). The will, however, expressly stated that he lived in Devizes, and ordered 100 masses to be said for his soul in St. John’s church there. Moreover, he left four tenements in the town, which were to revert on his widow’s death to their son, Robert, who was also to receive £40 in cash.2C219/11/5, 8; PCC 38 Marche.
