A resident burgess, Smith paid 6d. towards the levy on Great Bedwyn for the poll tax of 1379, his occupation being given as ‘smith’. His surety for attendance at both Parliaments of 1383 was John Elcombe, bailiff of the earl of Stafford’s hundred of Kinwardstone, in which Bedwyn was situated.1E179/196/42a; C219/8/4, 8, 9.
