Although he was closely involved in the business of local government for almost 20 years, and was, indeed, the only parliamentary burgess returned for Hull during our period who is known to have served as coroner there, Spalding remains a shadowy figure. In common with his contemporary and namesake, John Spalding of York, he was involved in the local cloth trade. Both men exported modest quantities of cloth from the port of Hull during the early 1390s, but there is nothing to suggest that they were related in any way.3E122/59/23, 24; Yorks. Arch. Soc. Rec.
