Sperlyng is first mentioned in 1380, when he purchased two houses in Wycombe from a fellow resident. As mayor, he presided over the meeting of the corporation in December 1388, when a tenement in Crendon Lane was granted to William Depham, and over another such assembly, in March 1390, which agreed to convey two dwellings in ‘le Newelond’ to William Marchaunt III. In 1392 along with another burgess and a local chaplain, he purchased a meadow just outside the town. At his election to Parliament in 1402, William Clerk II as one of his sureties for attendance. He is not recorded after the spring of 1413, when he witnessed the return of Andrew Sperlyng (probably his son) to the Lower House.2CP25(1)21/104/6; HMC 5th Rep. 562; C219/10/2, 11/1.
