WOOD, John II, of Ipswich, Suff.

Wood, a vintner, is first mentioned in the records of Ipswich at Easter 1406. Before 1411 he began a suit for debt in the court of common pleas against a Suffolk parson, but proved unsuccessful in recovering his money. He attested the Ipswich parliamentary returns in 1410, 1417, 1421 (Dec.), 1422, 1423, 1431, 1432, 1433, 1442 and 1447, on seven of these occasions acting as mainpernor for the attendance in the Commons of those elected.2Ipswich RO, recog. roll 6-14 Hen. Meanwhile he had been sworn in as a portman on 12 May 1418, and also chosen to be a coroner shortly before his only known election to Parliament. He is again mentioned as a portman in October 1429. In the following year he was fined 1s.4d. in Chancery when a former bailiff of Ipswich, for whom he had stood surety, failed to make an appearance in court.
