biography text

Wyldegose’s putative father, Richard, held (as for life) land at Slinfold, Warnham and Sullington from 1341 until after 1368.1Suss. Feet of Fines (Suss. Rec. Soc. xxiii), no. 1925; CPR, 1350-4, p. 112. He himself acquired seven acres in the nearby parish of Horsham in 1375, and no doubt also possessed other property there. He served on juries assembled at Horsham for the inquests post mortem on Beatrice, widow of Thomas, Lord Brewes, and her son, Sir Thomas Brewes, held respectively in 1383 and 1395. In June 1398, shortly after his appointment as a collector of parliamentary subsidies in Sussex, he took out a royal pardon.2Suss. Feet of Fines, no. 2450; C136/30/11, 86/5; C67/30 m. 12. Frequently a witness to deeds drawn up at Horsham, Wyldegose is last recorded as such in March 1412.3Add. Chs. 8847-8, 8852, 8854-5, 8862, 18683; Bodl. Chs. Suss. 142, 146-8, 205-7; Cat. Wiston Archs. ed. Booker, no. 1343. He may have been the father of Richard Wyldegose, tax collector in Suss. in 1406, who owned land at Isfield: Suss. Feet of Fines, no. 2706.
