James Martin, a banker, at the sign of ‘the Grasshopper’, in Lombard Street, was taken into partnership by his brother Thomas in 1714, becoming senior partner about 1727.1J. B. Buying the manor of Quy from Sir Francis Whichcote, he was returned unopposed for Cambridge in 1741, voting with the Government on the chairman of the elections committee in 1741 and on the Hanoverians in 1742 and 1744. He was much afflicted with the stone, which brought him to the grave ‘in the middle of life’,2Add. 5808, f. 46. 15 Dec. 1744.
