When Whichcote was returned unopposed for the vacancy caused by the death of John Bromley, an Oxford Tory wrote to Lord Harley: ‘I am hard put to it to excuse my Lord Harley for letting a Whig come in to the county of Cambridge’.HMC Portland, vii. 246. He voted with the Government, lost his seat at the next general election, and did not stand again. Soon afterwards he sold Quy to James Martin, thereafter living at Aswarby. He died 27 Oct. 1775.
