Another Robert Bolton, possibly the MP’s father, served as a juror at coroners’ inquests held at Derby in 1364, and in 1381, at the assizes, was found guilty with his wife Cecily of unlawfully acquiring property at nearby Alyaston.JUST 1/1488 mm. 33, 65; JUST 2/27 m. 2; CPR, 1370-4, p. 271. Shortly before his election to Parliament, on 9 Mar. 1414, the younger Robert, a butcher by trade, gave evidence at Derby to the royal commissioners investigating the activities of lollards in the locality. He was again pricked as a juror in 1426, for a suit between Ralph Hussey and Thomas Dethick. At the parliamentary elections held at Derby the previous year Bolton had stood surety for the attendance of Elias Stokkes.KB9/204/1 m. 63; E101/122/9; C219/13/3.
