Bottenham is first heard of in 1394, as presenting four woollen cloths for levy of alnage. In July 1403 he received a grant of property in Wilton, to be held jointly with William Chitterne, John Hardy and other fellow burgesses; and four years later he acted as a surety for Robert Frye II, clerk of the royal council, when the latter was elected for the borough to the Gloucester Parliament of 1407.
John Bottenham junior (who bought land in Salisbury in 1406, served as reeve there in 1408-9, and was still alive in 1429) and
Henry Bottenham
† (MP for Calne in 1422 and Chippenham in 1423) were doubtless kinsmen of his, perhaps even sons.
