CRABBE, Nicholas, of Weymouth, Dorset.

It may have been the elder Nicholas Crabbe who witnessed deeds at Weymouth in 1392 and served as bailiff in 1395-6, for he is known to have been still active in public affairs in April 1395.C146/396, 1134, 2376. But it was certainly Crabbe junior who, at Michaelmas 1397 (at the end of the first session of the Parliament to which he had been returned), entered into assurances before the earl of March’s bailiff at Wyke Regis that Philip Brice would pay the £2 still owing on his account as ‘messor’ of the manor. Crabbe witnessed conveyances at Weymouth in 1402, 1409, 1414 and 1434, having in the course of this period been assigned by the burgesses to take part in reporting, at the shire court, the results of the parliamentary elections for Weymouth of 1414 (Nov.), 1420, 1421, 1422, 1425, 1426 and 1429. He is not recorded after performing this same service (for the ninth time) at Dorchester in August 1435.SC6/834/30; C146/1415, 4823, 5944, 6110; C219/11/5, 12/4-6, 13/1, 3, 4, 14/1, 5. His brother John was bailiff of Weymouth in 1410-11 and 1413-14 (CAD, i. C1415; E368/183, 186).
