Earlier in the 14th century members of Farnfold’s family had been living at Wisborough, a dozen or so miles from Steyning, and John himself leased from the Fitzalan earls of Arundel land in the woods near there, as well as other property at Wepham. However, save that he was loosely described as being ‘of the rape of Bramber’ (on the occasion of his appointment as a collector of subsidies in 1401), his place of residence is not recorded.
