At the two elections of 1397 Gay went surety for the appearance in Parliament of Henry Seys and William Hicche II, respectively. Described as ‘the elder’, he was among the tenants of the borough of Portsmouth who, in 1410, refused to contribute towards the wages and expenses of one of the parliamentary burgesses, Henry Abraham, and was subsequently fined by the King’s bench.
