GORE, John, of Malmesbury, Wilts.

John Gore was perhaps a relative of a namesake who lived at Semington, near Trowbridge, Wiltshire, and was a verderer in the royal forests of Pewsham and Melksham at the time of his death, which occurred early in 1414.This John Gore held property at Hartham and Monkton Farleigh in the 1390s, and in 1392 demised land to Monkton Farleigh priory. He was in debt to the prior of Worspring, Somerset, in 1407. Having been appointed as a tax collector in Wilts. in June 1410, later in the year he acted as a proctor of the church of Broughton Gifford. Wilts. Feet of Fines (Wilts. Rec. In November 1422 he stood surety for John West’s attendance in Henry VI’s first Parliament, as burgess-elect for Malmesbury, and in the Trinity term of 1429 West acted as his attorney when he sued Richard Halle of Marshfield, Gloucestershire, for breaking into his houses at Malmesbury and carrying off property worth more than £5. West accompanied him to Parliament when he sat for the fourth and last time in 1431. All that is known of Gore’s later career is that he attended the elections of the knights of the shire for Wiltshire in April 1432, and was appointed in September following to collect a parliamentary subsidy.C219/13/1, 14/3; C88/115/13; CPR, 1429-36, p. 306.
