No record has been found of any resident burgess of Wycombe with this name.Two contemporary John Horewodes are recorded among the men of Buckinghamshire. John Horewode of Wendover, some nine miles from Wycombe, was impleaded for debt by the prioress of Marlow in 1402. He, or a descendant of the same name, witnessed the county election of 1432: CCR, 1402-5, p. 133; C219/14/3. A more prominent figure was John Horewode of Singleborough in Great Horewood, near Buckingham, in the north of the county. The s. of another John by his w. Mabel, he m. bef. Dec. 1420, Margaret, with whom he had a licence to celebrate mass in their chapel at Singleborough. He was alnager Beds. and Bucks. Nov. 1405-c. Mich. 1408; Jan. 1411-June 1419, May 1423-Feb. 1430; and tax collector, Bucks. Dec. 1421, Oct. 1422. That John shared custody of all manors and rents of the dowry of Alice, countess of Oxford, from May 1422, acted, in about 1427, as feoffee of the manors of Waterhall and Water Eaton, Bucks. and Purleigh, Essex, on behalf of Richard, Ld. Grey of Wilton; and in 1434 took the oath in Bucks. not to maintain those who broke the peace. He attended the county elections to nine Parliaments between 1414 (Nov.) and 1432, including that of December 1421. G.
