Notes

It is sometimes difficult to distinguish him from Sir William Beauchamp, 4th s. of Thomas, earl of Warwick (d. 1369), who was chamberlain of the Household 1378-80 and captain of Calais 1383, and was summoned to Parliament as Lord Abergavenny between 1392 and his d. in 1411.

BEAUCHAMP, Sir Walter (d.1430), of Bromham and Steeple Lavington, Wilts.

Family and Education
yr. bro. of Sir William.CP, ii. 46-47, followed by Roskell, gives Sir Walter as Sir William’s 1st s., the source being CPR, 1436-41, p. 364. However, in her will Sir William’s mother referred to both him and Sir Walter as her ‘sons’ (PCC 23 Marche), and this relationship is further suggested by the facts that the careers of the two men ran in tandem, and Sir Walter and his issue never succeeded to Sir William’s estates. The ped. given by W. Dugdale (Warws. 762) has therefore been preferred here. m. bef. Aug. 1400, Elizabeth (c.1385-Feb. 1447), da. and coh. of Sir John Roches of Bromham by Willelma, da. and h. of Sir Robert de la Mare† of Steeple Lavington, 2s. inc. Sir William†, 1da. Kntd. 1415.

BEAUCHAMP, Sir Roger (1362-1406), of Bletsoe, Beds. and Bloxham, Oxon.

Family and Education
b. Bletsoe, 14 Sept. 1362, s. of Sir Roger Beauchamp (d.v.p. 1373/4), prob. by his w. Joan, da. and h. of William Clopton, wid. of Sir Walter Walcot† of Gunton, Norf.; gds. and h. of Roger, Lord Beauchamp of Bletsoe (d.1380), governor of Calais and chamberlain of Edward III’s household. m. Mary, at least 1s. suc. gdfa. 3 Jan. 1380; Kntd. by 18 Feb. 1393.CP, ii. 44-45; CIPM , xv. no. 957; CFR, xi. 145-6; xiii. 57. The genealogy of the Beauchamp family given in Vis. Beds. (Harl. Soc. xix), 52 contains many errors largely as a result of the common name shared by successive generations of Beauchamps. Confusion between our Member, his father and grandfather is to be found even in the CP, where Joan Clopton is described as his wife, when she can only have been his mother or stepmother (F. Blomefield, Norf. viii. 120).
Offices Held

Commr. to prevent the spread of treasonous rumours, Dorset May 1402.

Controller of a tax, Beds. Mar. 1404; collector Apr. 1404.

Main residence: Bletsoe, Beds. and Bloxham, Oxon.
