biography text

John Frederick succeeded his brother Thomas at Shoreham but in 1741 gave up the seat to his younger brother, Charles, unsuccessfully contesting Chippenham jointly with his brother-in-law Alexander Hume. With the support of the Government he and Hume presented an election petition, the defeat of which in the House of Commons finally decided Walpole to resign.1Walpole to Mann, 4 Feb. 1742.

In 1743 Frederick was brought in for West Looe by the Administration, with whom he consistently voted. For many years he was a constant but unsuccessful applicant for places and favours, on the ground that

our family have for many years served his Majesty with the most inviolable attachment, and at as great an expense as any commoners whatever.25 Mar. 1750, Add. 32720, f. 127.

He died 9 Apr. 1783.
