biography text

Robert, a smith by trade as well as name, resided at Derby but held some property at nearby Stenson. In March and June 1414 his name was short-listed for jury service at Derby with a view to his providing information about lollardy and criminal activities in the town, but he was not chosen in the event. He did, however, act as a juror later for the lawsuit heard in Derby in 1426 between Ralph Hussey and Thomas Dethick, and for the Derby assessments for contributions to a royal aid in 1431. In the meantime he attended the borough elections to the Parliaments of 1427 and 1429.2CPR, 1416-22, p. 429; KB9/204/1 m. 78, 2 m. 34; E101/122/9; Feudal Aids, i. 277; C219/13/5; 14/1.
