biography text
Upton came from a family which had owned land and property in Old Sarum since the 13th century. In October 1380 he witnessed a deed relating to land there and in neighbouring Stratford sub Castle. John Avery I, another resident, was his surety for attendance at the Parliament of October 1382, and Upton himself performed a like service for William Haulegh, when the latter was elected for Old Sarum to the second Parliament of 1383.1VCH Wilts. vi. 64; Tropenell Cart. ed.
