biography text

Avery was apparently one of the more important resident burgesses of Old Sarum, for which borough he was returned to Parliament on at least ten occasions. John Wallop of Salisbury acted as his surety for attendance in 1384 (Nov.) and Robert Page in 1394. He himself fulfilled this role at Old Sarum several times: for William Ashton in 1378, John Chipplegh in 1382 and 1385, Walter Upton in 1382 and William Haulegh in 1383. He also witnessed local deeds from 1380 to 1400, including one, dated September 1400, in his capacity as mayor. Meanwhile, as a parishioner of St. Peter’s, Old Sarum, he had been present when, in April 1395, Bishop Waltham of Salisbury held a visitation, although it was as a parishioner of Stratford sub Castle that he welcomed the dean of Salisbury, John Chandler, on the occasion of his tour of inspection ten years later.2C219/8/2, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 9/10; Tropenell Cart. ed. Davies, i. 144, 147; Reg. John Chandler (Wilts. Rec. Soc. xxxix), 54; R. Benson and H. Hatcher, Old and New Sarum, 755.

Bartholomew Avery and the John Avery who was mayor of Old Sarum in 1453 were probably his relatives.3C219/16/2.
